Lễ trao giải MTV Video music awards đang diễn ra và được truyền hình trực tiếp trên toàn thế giới từ Nhà hát Nokia tại Los Angeles. Chelsea Handler đảm nhiệm vai trò Người dẫn chương trình năm nay.

Lady Gaga là nghệ sĩ sở hữu nhiều đề cử nhất với con số 13 (Nếu tính của video hợp tác cùng Beyoncé là 18). Với 13 đề cử khác nhau, Lady Gaga trở thành nghệ sĩ được đề cử nhiều nhất trong lịch sử VMA trong vòng 1 năm, và cũng là nghệ sĩ solo duy nhất nhận được 2 đề cửu cho giải thưởng quan trọng nhất - Video của năm với ca ca khúc Bad romance và Telephone. Eminem "đeo đuổi" ở vị trí thứ 2 với 8 đề cử cho "Not Afraid" và một đề cử chung với Drake với "Forever", tuy nhiên, Eminem chỉ giành được 2 giải thưởng từ VMA năm nay là Nam nghệ sĩ có video xuất sắc nhất và Video nhạc Hip-Hop xuất sắc nhất .

Beyoncé và B.o.B ở vị trí thứ 3 với 5 đề cử, trong đóBeyoncé có 3 đề cử chung với Lady Gaga cho video Telephone. 30 Seconds. Mars, Kesha và Florence and the Machine đều giành được 4 đề cử cho riêng mình. Tuy nhiên, với chiến thắng áp đảo của Lady Gaga thì các nghệ sĩ trên đều gom về số giải ít ỏi còn lại thuộc lĩnh vực thế mạnh của mình : 30 Seconds to Mars với "Kings and Queens" giành Video nhạc Rock xuất sắc nhất, Florence and the Machine với "Dog Days Are Over" mang về giải thưởng Đạo diễn nghệ thuật xuất sắc nhất cho Louise Corcoran và Aldene Johnson, Jay-Z và Alicia Keys trong "Empire State of Mind" mang về giải thưởng Quay phim xuất sắc nhất cho Đạo diễn hình ảnhJohn Perez.
